What to Expect from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
In-Office Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber
At Polaris Collective Wellness, I believe healing works best when you understand what’s happening in your body and feel comfortable every step of the way. If you’re curious about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), welcome—this overview will walk you through what it is, how it works, and what you can expect.
What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy uses increased atmospheric pressure and concentrated oxygen to support the body’s natural healing processes. By increasing oxygen availability at a cellular level, HBOT can support recovery, reduce inflammation, enhance neurological function, and promote overall resilience.
HBOT is one of the tools I use to help my clients realign with their “North Star”—supporting the body’s ability to heal, adapt, and regain balance.
When it’s time to begin your session, you’ll enter the hyperbaric chamber by carefully climbing in and lying down comfortably. While it can feel a bit awkward at first, we will be there to help and ensure your comfort.
Once you’re inside, the chamber is zipped closed, and the system is powered on.
As the chamber pressurizes, you may notice your ears popping—similar to the sensation of ascending or descending in an airplane. This is completely normal.
To help clear your ears, you can:
Gently hold your nose and blow outward
Chew gum
Open your mouth slightly or swallow
I will move at a pace that you are comfortable with, and our team will check in with you throughout the process.
A typical HBOT session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes, depending on your goals and the reason for treatment. During this time, most people rest, listen to music, meditate, or simply enjoy the stillness.
Many clients describe the experience as deeply calming—a rare opportunity to slow down while the body does important work behind the scenes.
When your session is complete, the chamber is slowly depressurized. You may notice another gentle ear-popping sensation as pressure returns to normal.
Exiting the chamber, much like entering, involves carefully climbing out. Again, our team is there to assist as needed.
Aftercare: Supporting Your Body Post-Session
After your HBOT session, we recommend:
Drinking water to support hydration
Having your blood pressure checked **
Taking a moment to notice how you’re feeling before leaving
Most people feel relaxed, clear-headed, or energized afterward!
** We check blood pressure before your HBOT session to establish a baseline and ensure treatment is appropriate for you that day. HBOT can cause mild, temporary vasoconstriction, so we check your blood pressure again afterward to confirm your body is responding well and you’re feeling balanced before leaving.
About the Oxygen
Oxygen is delivered through a mask connected to an oxygen concentrator. The concentrator pulls in ambient air from the room and increases its oxygen concentration before delivery.
This setup provides meaningful therapeutic benefit while remaining accessible, gentle, and well-tolerated by clients.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is not about forcing the body to change—it’s about giving it the conditions it needs to do what it already knows how to do: heal, adapt, and restore balance.
If you’re curious about whether HBOT is right for you, we’re here to answer questions, discuss goals, and help you discover your North Star to whole-body resilience!
